Just started searching for a used shotgun for home protection. Visited a few Pawn/gun shops and seems like the average price is $300-350.

I'd like to get a 5 rounder, just to make it easier for the wifey.

What have you guys paid for your used shotguns?

Used 870s should not be over $200 for a plain model with a 4 rd tube mag. I believe that most Express models are under $300 new. Walmart last had them around $250, or so.
I paid about $200 for a chopped up 870 with a pistol grip, Surefire fore end, and side saddle a few years back.

Do some research in the gun forums and see what used ones go for.

I haven't seen a WalMart in my area that sells guns. Mostly they sell ammo and bb guns.
I found a place on the net where the Maverick goes for 179.00, but nothing close to that price here in Fl.

I do not like the Mavericks with just one slide bar and am not really a Mossberg guy. I prefer the Rem 870 over Mossy and Benelli/HK or a semi auto Remington.

You have to check the local forums and for sale sections and with some patience will score.

I don't have much more than $80 in this toy plus a little work but have actually tacticooled it for my son when he was about 15 and still fell for that stuff. The deals are out there for the patient and vigilant buyer 8) .
I do not like the Mavericks with just one slide bar"
Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what do you mean with the above statement?

I mainly chose the Maverick for certain basic reasons....home defense, price range, warranty (if I go with a new one) and the ability to interchange parts with its big brothers.

I found a few used ones after a quick run thru the local pawn shops. However they were beat up and the asking price was ridiculous. One shop wanted 319.00 for a Mossy 500 with a pistol grip that looked as if a truck had run all over it.

I've seen the Mavericks online going for 179.00 brand new with the one year warranty so I thought that I'd be able to find some in that price range locally..............I'm still looking.

To pump the gun you will rack the foregrip and on a Maverick there is only one bar that goes into the receiver to operate the bolt.

Normally you have a bar on each side.

i've seen mossy 500A and remy 300-350 new
250-300 used
i grabbed 2 used mossy 500A, one i'm keeping, one i'm selling.
remy's are nice, not used to the release, rather have my thumb on it. both are fine shotties, you cant go wrong with either.
mavrick is a cheap version on the mossy. you should be fine with it for home protection. make sure you take her out and put some rounds through it to loosen it up a bit. get use to the feel and action, get very close with your shotty, get used to loading it with your eyes closed or in the dark. when do most perps break in a house? at night, right? if your loaded your ready, if not, darkness & panic can set in and may delay getting a round in.

Thanks for a good advice. "She" will be loaded and ready to go 24/7.

I posted here and found out that indeed there are a few Wally world stores around and in Orlando that still sell real guns. I also found out that after hunting season you can grab a Maverick for around $150.00. Needless to say I'm going shopping this wknd and with some luck I'll be able to score a good deal.

How much would you be asking for the one you'd like to sell?

I picked up a couple of Mossberg HD shotguns at $200-$225 each back at the beginning of the year and just bought a tricked out Rem 870 for $300. Keep an eye on the boards and walk around a gun show paying attention to what the individuals are toting around and you should be able to pick up a used shotgun for $200 and up depending on what comes with it.

If you're in or near Jacksonville, Gun Gallery on Beach blvd has / had about a dozen police trade in 870's at $199.95
I believe that they are all 2 3/4" chambers some are parked some blued typical 18.5" IC wood furniture. Decent shape.
Some still have Volusia County SO stickers on them.

You're quite welcome Kurt, I picked up one from there on Monday. Couldn't walk away from that deal. The ones at GG all have / had wood furniture. The one I picked up is a garden variety 870 wingmaster 2 3/4 chamber it needed a good cleaning (dirty and dusty) but the wood furniture is flawless, Parkerized finish. Here's a few pics.post-7997-1234915235.jpg[/attachment:fc363]post-7997-1234915284.jpg[/attachment:fc363]post-7997-1234915308.jpg[/attachment:fc363]

you can resize those in "Paint" fairly easily..

open your Start Menu, go to Accessories, and click on Paint

In Paint, click "File" in the top left, and go down to 'Open' and click it, that will bring up your "My Pictures" file by default, but if your pics are somewhere else, you can easily get them. Double click your picture to open it in Paint

Back in Paint, your picture is up now. Look up on the tool bar and find the "Image" tab. Click it and scroll down to "resize/skew" Click that and a popup will come up with "Horizontal and Vertical" percentage numbers. Just change the numbers equally until you get the picture the size you want (with the ones you have posted, I'd start with 50% and then maybe 75% of that if it is still too big.)

Once you have the pic the size you want, click on the 'File' tab again, scroll to 'Save as' and save it. Use a new file name if you want to keep your originals unedited.

It sounds hard, but it is very easy.

Once you get them resized you can just edit your post taking out the old attachments and putting the new ones.

Hope this helps!!
