as a general rule I take them apart once a year and do a complete wipe down and cleaning of all my mags...
also, I pay close attention to any clip that fires over 500 rounds, my carry mags and the ones that shoot wolf ammo... they do so much 4 me so I treat the nice...

I pick them up off the ground, and shake the dirt out of them. If I'm feeling whimsical, I may blow a little air near the opening.

Cleaning done.

well MR. B, that is practical indeed, but don't u worry about the burnt powder that stays inside???

not really, no.

Thousands of rounds later... still working fine.

I'm sure that SOME gun oil gets down into the mags from me over oiling the guns, so it drips onto what ever mag gets tossed in there next. Other than that, mags are cheap, my time isn't.

I've not had a failure yet that was due to a dirty mag, or even due to a "bad magazine", so if I ever do, I'll look closely to see if dirt might have been a contributor. But for now, I'm not concerned about cleaning my magazines.

Of course, YMMV :D

Wipe the outside with a dry cloth after every range visit

Some mags get more attention and care than others. I find lint more repulsive than powder residue.

I cleaned the mags of my S&W 22A first time when I had feeding malfunctions. Those malfunctions continued and I could link them to a hairline crack in the frame.
That was around 60,000 rounds.

wow, at 60K I would expect any gun to crack...

...and to be honest, I got it well used for $125 plus tax, in the box with two mags. S&W fixed everything under their warranty.

The gun still is very accurate and reliable.

By the way, that is the same gun that I had defiantly cleaned with WD40 only.

I clean mine ever once in a while. With the .45acp's they are shot more than anything and they get a lot of burnt powder and oil in them. I use CLP and wipe a little on the springs. So far I have never had a mag problem. :D

the reason why I clean m mags more that most people is because 2 of them, -2 out of about 50- both BERETTA but none of them -originals- have a FTF on the very last round unless I clean them really well... why do U boys thin that happens???

I try a set of new springs in the Joe from Wolff. http://www.gunsprings.com/ :D

roger that, Baldy...

Also, if new springs don't help, look carefully at the lips on those two magazines. If you are having a problem 'only on the last round" it may be that the last round moves slightly to the side due to a bent lip, when it doesn't have another round holding it in place (I'm assuming these are doublestack mags)

But, it is probably the spring, like Baldy says.

thanks boys, I will look into that, specially what Mr. B said... the mags that FTF on the last load r both MDS for the M-9 AND THE PX4 and NOT the original BERETTA italian made that the guns came with...

ok, I have to bring this subject back up, so I can eat my words a bit.

I was unloading my mags for my little LCP, because I had a new type of ammo I wanted to try. Lo and behold, one of my followers jammed. It was full of sand. I guess there was some sand in my pocket or something.

So I now HAVE had to clean a magazine. It wasn't due to it being used and left dirty, it was a new magazine (loaded 2-3 times max) Just had some pocket dirt hit it the right way. Goes to show though, spare carry mags should be in a holster or something, since I found out how easily they can get fouled carried loosely in the pocket.

that's OK Mr. B cleaning mags is a pain but once U get the hang of it U can do about 12 in an hour... I make it a point to clean mine because of the lint and ammo build up... for gun-lovers cleaning mags should be "almost" as fun to clean a gun...

After every use I just use some dust-off compressed air inside then wipe off the magazine follower w/non corrosive cleaner then wipe it w/a lite oil rag. Also I only use factory magazines....

wow, Bob, I have never met anyone who cleans them every time... usually once a year and that's already asking a lot!!!!

I clean the feed lips and follower everytime I shoot. but dont take the mags apart just wipe with a clean cloth and some light clp. I take the mags apart when I first buy them and clean cause they are dirty from the factory most times. oil the inside with rem oil with teflon in it. then maybe every year or so take em apart and clean good again. only if I use it of course.

I never clean mine.

Once I figured I would parkerize about 15 sten mags for my MAC. They were chock full of cosmoline so I figured I would throw them in 50% muratic acid/water for a bit before I cleaned them out then blasted them.

I conked out on the couch and didn't get to them until the next morning. Ruined :(

I tried to clean mine once....I could never get them to feed correctly again. And I almost lost the floor plate when I didn't clip it back together correctly. I went to reload the mag and BOOM! pieces went everywhere.
