View Full Version : Carry At Work?

I recently had a Loss Prevention Officer check my phone holster at the box store. He thought I was carrying a weapon and asked me as he brushed away my vest and checked.
Its a rule, no weapons of any kind on the premises. I was a bit surprised and did not have time to even react. I guess our conversations about guns have been noted and passed on to mgt.
I just told him, no, thats just a phone. It did **** me off and I wanted to say, "Can I rely on you to protect me in the event of a crazed gun nut coming into our store!" But I just went on about my business.
Do you think I handled this situation correctly?? If not what would you have done differently?

I believe you did right.
Do not tell and no one will know. If there is a "no carry" policy within the company, they have the right to terminate you if they catch you.
Every day I talk less and less about guns in my place of work. It make people nervous and scare, is a byproduct of ignorance.

Most of the people today have been spoon fed the liberal garbage about guns through schools, the media and such. The owner has the right not to allow guns in his place of employment. Just the same as I would have that right in my house. The line stops there in my book. What's in your car, truck, or motocycle is your personal property of which nobody should have any access to without a warrant and served by a police officer. We just won that right down here in Florida and the big stores are appealing it to a federal judge.

Our place said that we cant carry inside, they also said that they won't let us keep them in the cars! CCW or not! I carry mine in the truck but its locked up and no one knows and if asked to search I'll insist on seeing a warrant! The property is public access and is accessible to the general public so the same rules would have to apply to the customers and I don't think we'd keep our customers by asking to search their cars!

I too, have a boss who not only allows carry on the premises, but actually has trained with me. I'm sure I'm in the minority.
You did well to just let it pass. "Meekness" is defined as "power under control." And, a secret loses half its power the instant its existence is known. I'm not suggesting you disobey your employers policy. Termination of employment stinks, especially in these times.

Are you saying he just searched you without your permission? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe anyone has the right do that unless you are being arrested.
The way you handled it is good. If that happened to me though, I would've submitted a complaint to HR.

Your employer is violating the "Guns at Work" law which recently went into effect in Florida. An employer in Florida cannot deny you the right to keep your firearm locked in the car during working hours as long a you have a CWL.

Depends on what kind of employer he has. There are several exceptions to the law. My employer qualifies for one of those exceptions, and they don't let us keep guns in our cars either.

If a store or employer's agent, searched me or my property, without my permisson, I would have called the cops and demanded an complaint be filed.
It's just me. No one is going to put their hands on me, with out my okay, but cops.
I get realy pissed at things like that.

i don't know, i am conflicted on this issue, i feel if your on someone else s property then they can set the rules for what you can bring in or out, but leaving your heater in your car could be a different matter

Concealed means concealed. If it is not in the following list, I carry.
(12) No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any career center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

You might be the narrow exception, however, most people who carry do not work for companies that produce or store explosives or fireworks.
It sounded like he was just dealing with someone who wanted to bypass the law.

I won't take a job that won't allow me to carry. Thats one reason I became a truck driver. The other is I got tired of doing real work :D I kept it from most employers till I got a feel for them. I was surprised to learn most of them carried as well.

As frequently as the crime rate in pensacola has been rising, I consider getting the ball rolling on my CWL more and more. Especially with the rate restaurants (and their employees) have been getting robbed going up as fast as it has.
